Corn Day

Yesterday we enjoyed a very nice day here at home. We don't get to do it very often, which just makes the days that we do, even more special. I had ordered some corn from a local farmer and got my bag of 48 ears on Friday night, which meant our nice day at home was spent putting up corn. This is not a totally new concept for me because growing up I got to help out with my Papa's corn every year.

First you shuck. Even Hazel helped by keeping us company on the porch.

Then the silking. We put in a movie and enjoyed the peace and quiet while Hazel took a nap.

Hazel tested!

Then washing and cutting the kernels off the cob.

Then after some final directions from Papa we started to cooking process. At this point I wasn't feeling very good and Hazel was tired of being put second to corn so it was a little more chaotic and more like work then fun, but it got done all the same.

Please notice that in all the pictures there were 2 work stations. Even though I wasn't in any pictures I did do my part. Promise.

We were able to freeze 18 servings of corn and it feels great. Since we have been back in Williamsburg we have been able to can some green beans, freeze some corn, blueberries, and peaches. It has been learning experience and lots of fun.

  2. Yes, it can definitely be a lot of work at times, but when you can see the results of your labors in your freezer and food storage closet, it makes it so rewarding. : )

  4. WOw that is great! I guess I always took for granted that my mom would be there and knows and did all the canning and freezing...I better learn for myself someday soon.
